Frequently asked Questions

Why chose McLean Irrigation over Contractor B?

McLean Irrigation has been in business since 1991. We are Licensed, bonded, insured, and use the highest quality material and parts available. We meet or exceed industry standards and we never cut corners or take shortcuts to install our systems. That is why we will match or beat any comparable bid that is equal in all regards to ours. When evaluating a competitor’s proposal, the biggest mistake people make is to look at Price, number of heads, and number of zones. In reality; experience, longevity, certifications, material, track records, etc. when combined together, give you the full picture. We have all heard the saying “you get what you pay for”. When you combine quality with price and overall value, McLean Irrigation is the right company for the project.

Do you offer a Warranty on my system?

Yes. We offer a limited 5 year warranty on all installations.

Do you use PVC Pipe or Poly Pipe?

PVC pipe is used to install all main line and lateral lines for the entire project. The advantage of Poly pipe, is that it comes in a roll and is light weight, flexible, and has easy no-glue fittings. The main drawback, is that the pipe is simply not as rugged as PVC pipe and poly pipe systems generally will not last as long. Contractors like to use Poly pipe because it can be “pulled” or plowed easily and is much less labor intensive to install. Also, Poly pipe should not be used for lawn sprinkler heads; it is best used for bubblers, agriculture, and drip irrigation. RainBird does not recommend using poly pipe for the mainline connecting pipe.

Why is it so important that I use a contractor with a Master Plumbing License?

There a several reasons for this. 1) The plumbing work and Installation can be performed simultaneously on the same day. 2) There is no need to worry about coordinating or using sub-contractors. 3) Any required permits can be pulled. 4) Making sure the job is done correctly and to code.

Do I need to install a Backflow Preventer?

Yes. A backflow preventer’s Purpose is to protect your drinking water from the possible contaminants from your lawn. It is a requirement to install this device on all systems. There are different types of backflow preventers and depending on the jurisdiction in which we are installing a system will depend on the type of backflow preventer that we may be required to install.

Should I install a separate water meter for my sprinkler system?

If you are a resident in Northern Virginia, then the answer is generally No. However, if you are a resident in Maryland or the District of Columbia, then you may want or need to consider this option. In Virginia, the water authorities use your average water sewage rate during the winter months and calculate this rate for your summer rate.

How much will my sprinkler system cost?

This is a common question, but without surveying your actual property size, shape, location, terrain, landscaping layout, Hardscape, and other factors; it is very difficult to give an estimated or accurate cost prior to evaluating your specific property. You can’t give an average cost based on property size due to the infinite possibilities of how the property could possibly look without seeing it first. Cost can vary greatly depending on the scope of the project and labor cost involved.

How will my Irrigation system be designed?

Because each and every property is unique in its own way, there is no cookie cutter solution. Every property needs to have an independent evaluation. Once the property has been assessed as to it’s own unique characteristics, you may then design the irrigation system accordingly. It is very important to design the system based on head to head coverage. It is also very important to design the system to cover the lawn separately from the landscape flower beds, as the watering requirements are very different from one another.

Why do I need head to head coverage?

In order to water an area evenly and properly, you need to have head to head coverage. This will ensure equal water distribution and prevent dry spots in the yard (particularly if it becomes very hot and there is a lack of rainfall). Proper design is crucial to the irrigation system! If you do not have head to head coverage, you may as well not bother installing the system at all.

How do I prevent my system from watering in the rain?

As a standard practice, we install a rain sensor on all irrigation systems that we install. This device can also be adjusted based on precipitation rates.

What brand of material do you commonly use when installing my system?

Typically we use a combination of Rainbird, Hunter, and Irritrol.

Why use a variety of manufacturer parts for my installation?

Depending on the type of installation and or types of applications, different manufacturer’s may offer a better product to serve a particular application.

I got another bid from a competitor and the price is 25%-50% less.

We have all heard the phrase “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”(Buyer beware). There can be several explanations’ for this, but in short, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Company, material, design, license’s, certifications, insurances, permits, warranties, etc., will all play a role in the overall cost. However, if someone else does not have the qualifications, or expertise, it is understandable that they can low ball a bid to try and obtain the project. Due diligence will separate the pros from the amateurs and “fly by night” competitors. Usually a cheap price initially, equates too much larger costs in the long term for repairs and or modifications. Ultimately, you will get what you pay for.
